With the sad news about the iconic Central Park’s Boathouse officially closing due to Covid-19 and laying off more than 160 employees, we decided to list 3 New York City’s food landmarks that are still alive and kicking:
Russ and Daughters (@russanddaughters)
The NY’s dearest little goldfish
Open since 1914, the historic Jewish deli, NYC’s homes of bagels and lox, family owned for 4 generations is known for one of the best smoked fish in town. Kudos for the salmon, the herring, the white fish salad and the amazing types of cream cheese.
Russ and Daughters has 4 locations. The very first one at 179 E. Houston Street, the Cafe at 127 Orchard Street, the restaurant and take out appetizing counter at Jewish Museum (1109 5thAve.), and the brand new Brooklyn location at the Brooklyn Navy Yard (141 Flushing Ave.)
During the Covid-19 Pandemic, Russ and Daughters counted on loyal customers like the actor Jake Gyllenhaal to keep on going. Jake used the now popular pink tie-dye Russ and Daughters t-shirt during a challenge to support your local business in NYC. On the other hand, Russ and Daughters sent bags and bags of (delicious) food to healthcare workers in hospitals around the city.
How is Russ and Daughters operating?

Zabar’s (@zabarsisny)
An Upper West Side’s classic
Still talking about great smoked salmon, bagels, good cheese and coffee, the Zabar’s is very well know for movie fans. Spotted in Rom-Coms like “You’ve Got Mail” (1998) and the classic Woody Allen’s “Manhattan” (1979), the landmark store located at 2245 Broadway and 80th Street has been open for 86 years and counting. It now has a newly improved Café since last September, with new foods, a new take-out window and a new cold brew Zabar’s coffee on tap. The very own Saul Zabar was there (smiling under the mask) ready to welcome the also very loyal Upper West Side neighbors. So sweet!

Besides the take out, Zabar’s has local delivery available and according to their website the Main Store Hours are:
Monday – Saturday: 8am -7:30pm

Junior’s Restaurant and Cheesecake (@juniorscheesecake)
The governor’s favorite pie
The restaurant and deli from Brooklyn is so famous for its cheesecake (the best in NY) that Governor of NY, Andrew Cuomo, included a slice (or maybe a whole pie) on the “New York Cares” get well package to the president of the United States and the First Lady following the news that they tested positive for Covid-19. See? A classic!
How is Junior’s Operating:
Unfortunately, Manhattan locations are temporarily closed, but Junior’s is offering takeout and delivery services through apps, and the Brooklyn location at 386 Flatbush Ave. is open 7 days per week from 10am-8pm according to their phone contact. Stay tuned for the reopening!
Important: Due to the unusual times, please check that venues remain open on their websites.
